It’s always a delight to interview someone who is not Anglo-centric in their experience of wargaming, and my guest today brings a breath of fresh air from the Netherlands to the show.
Peter began as a military modeller but, in his words, “accidentally walked into wargaming”. But he also took his military history seriously, studying for both a Bachelor’s degree in Utrecht and and then a Masters Degree in Amsterdam, for which he specialised in the study of “La Petite Guerre” during the Wars of the Spanish Succession.
But Peter has taken his wargaming and turned it into a business, launching BelloLudi as a tool for business team-building and leadership exercises. This has resulted into some fascinating insights into the different ways that wargamers and ‘normal’ people see our games, and the things that we take for granted that seem very strange to a non-gamer!
So sit back and listen to Peter explain how he managed to turn what could have been just a pipe-dream into a real side hustle, and how he has also embarked on a massive rule-writing project to showcase our hobby to the wider world.

P.S. Wargames Atlantic may be issuing a WWI starter set with skirmish rules based on the BelloLudi set.
‘Petty Warfare’ (which I think is a poor substitute for “La Petite Guerre”!)
