I don’t think any of you here are newbies but still, you might have ideas about what I should include in this project.
This is NOT a Compendium – it will be about the size of one of the Tabletop Tactics books (not the Deluxe combined version) so it can be cheap and accessible for newcomers.
Henry
Hello Henry,
I’m a beginner at wargamming. Played «memoir ’44» a few times, Hannibal once, one or two Blue and Grey battles, Kesselring’s war once… But I am still missing something. Apart from reading the rulebook, what should I analyse, how should I do that. From my point of view, wargammers are complaining that it is difficult to find gaming prtners but on the other hand I have not met player that are eager to explain while playing… I was a seafarer before GPS and Satnav and celectial navigation felt just the same.
So I am looking for a book that would guide me into wargaming. With a lot of examples from different game mechanics…
Thanks for your interesting comment, Laurent. It’s a shame my Wargaming Compendium is out of print because I went to great lengths to explain the basic tenets of the hobby there – you might find a copy second-hand somewhere until I can finish the new book. Also you might find the videos introducing my Shot, Steel
& Stone videos useful – Shot Steel & Stone playlist – and, of course, the reels I’m making for Facebook/Instagram
Morning H
I’m not sure if this is the place to leave a comment, but here goes….
There was no internet when I started so research was difficult as was finding suppliers. ‘Making do’ was the order of the day so, I think a beginner’s guide should suggest alternatives to expensive bespoke wargaming stuff. Please avoid referrences to Bannana Oil.
Don’t forget 1/72 plastics when talking about choice of figures (Plastic Soldier Review).
Historical accuracy isn’t king, that’s ‘close enough’.
Making your own battle mat (painting a blanket).
I’m rambling so I’ll stop.
Best of luck
Iain
Cheers Iain and yes, of course I’m going to be looking at inexpensive and simple ways to get started.
I would be interested in your take and ideas on solo wargaming especially around the issues such as fog of war and scouting in the context of Solo gaming
I’ll certainly have a section on solo wargaming, Neil.
