Battlechat 62 with Alex ‘Storm of Steel’ Sotheran

Alex + cat + impressive vinyl collection

In a wide-ranging interview, I asked Alex Sotheran – a soft-spoken Yorkshireman whose blog and YouTube channels have rightly become hugely popular in recent years – not only about his journey into the wargaming hobby, but also about his fascinating career as an archaeologist.

This turned out to be an engrossing journey, because Alex has travelled all over the world unearthing the past, including such far-flung places as Japan, Ireland and Iceland. Whether picking up pottery shards near a tenth-century castle in Japan, or researching old army training grounds on M.O.D. land here in the UK, his enthusiasm for his chosen work is palpable.

This is especially evident when he describes the passion and care with which he has explored  First World War battlefields in France, and his accounts are both engrossing, moving and, at one point, terrifying!

But of course, our interest in what Alex is up to is in our hobby, and here I am full of admiration for what he has achieved as a blogger, a vidcaster on YouTube with close to 3,000 subscribers, and now a Patreon creative. He describes his journey to becoming a popular online broadcaster and what inspired him to take this route to commenting on the hobby and providing a host of informative videos and blog posts.

We also find some time to chat about solo wargaming, which was the subject of one of his recent videos, and explore the ways in which this aspect of the hobby has become particularly relevant today.

In short, I’m sure that you’ll find Alex to be a delightful guest and will agree with me that he absolutely must come back on the show to tell us more of his stories!

Henry
