Battlechat 102 with Duncan Weldon

After a bit of an interval, I’m back with another Battlechat and this time I’m introducing you to one of my patrons, Duncan Weldon.

As well as being a wargamer, Duncan is a highly respected economics journalist and historian, whose first book Two Hundred Years of Muddling Through was extremely well received. His forthcoming book, Blood & Treasure, the Economics of Conflict, will certainly appeal to those of us mad enough to take our world-building for imagi-nations to the next level!

Duncan was first introduced to wargaming as a ‘GW child’, rather than being of the crustier ‘Airfix generation’, but that didn’t stop him playing with 1/72 soft plastic figures when the likes of Esci, Italeri and Zvezda came onto the scene!

Our guest is a member of the mightly London Wargaming Guild which meets in central London and boasts over 1,000 members playing games of all kinds. And it was as part of this club that he helped organise two games that won awards at Salute in consecutive years, most recently this year when their amazing “London Bridge Frost Fair” took ‘Best of Show’ as well as ‘Best Participation Game’. Not surprisingly, therefore, Duncan has plenty to say about important considerations for participation games and planning big projects!

I also asked Duncan about what he has planned next, and lovers of big games will be excited to hear about his ideas for large weekend games in Hertfordshire. Who knows where that might lead? It can’t be any more risky than his plans with a friend to build 28mm frigates!

Relax and enjoy my chat with this highly intelligent and engaging guest whose passion for the hobby shines through.

Henry
