I’ve just published a video to YouTube about my visit to Cavalier 2020 in Tonbridge, Kent today.
It includes a review of some WWII 20mm miniatures given to my by Paul of Early War Miniatures at the show that will thrill aficionados of the Far eastern theatre of the war, and I also reveal his new range for a conflict that I suspect many of you will not know anything about. I also discover a Lardy secret about another sample given to me!
I also found myself unexpectedly spending money with David Lanchester because his display of books included some delightfully juicy morsels I simply could not resist.
Finally, I include a series of photos from the show of the games on offer. To be honest, there were pretty slim pickings this year, but there were some interesting wargames being shown, though by the early afternoon, many of the tables were looking abandoned.
Why? I have to say that this year’s show, perhaps hampered by poor weather, road works nearby and a distinct lack of publicity (the TWWS really do need to get to grips with social media) seemed poorly attended to me, though several traders reported that their sales in the first couple of hours were encouraging. By lunchtime, however, the show appeared to have fallen off a cliff.
However, this did mean that I had time to chat with several people at length including Paul at EWM, Mick Sayce (who wrote articles for MWBG and whose booklets I am now publishing via Gladius), John Treadaway (editor of MW), Bob Cordery, veteran wargamer in the Wargames Developments mould and author of, amongst others, The Portable Wargame, a clutch of The Postie’s Rejects, Mike Siggins and the ever-enthusiastic Brad Harmer-Barnes, another of my ex-columnists!
So, do pop over to YouTube for a 40 minute jaunt that includes an excited ‘un-bagging’ (as opposed to un-boxing) of the EWM miniatures, a flip-through the books I bought with some commentary, and a musical slideshow of the games at the show.
