The Other Partizan 2024: My Report

This has taken me a bit longer to put together than previously, but as you’re probably aware, I’ve had just a tad of domestic drama to attend to since getting back home! (Since you ask, no, still no progress with the insurance company…)

I took hundreds of photos and have included many of them here, in an attempt to reproduce what it was like walking round the show – although in all honesty, I had a lot of ground to cover because of my judging responsibilities and the show was packed, both with paying punters and with glorious games, so some of the images were almost taken at a jogging pace!

Some of the photos were taken early in the morning before the games had really got underway, whilst others were taken later during what might be best described as the scrum! This means that some of the small participation games in particular might not be looking at their best here, and I don’t want you to think that their organisers were in any way lacking enthusiasm or participants.

One of the most striking things for me at this show was the prevalence of 18th century games – indeed, it wouldn’t be unfair to nickname last Sunday as ‘Tricorne Wars’! It was a true delight to see my favourite gaming era given such prominence by so many clubs, albeit all in 28mm scale.

The standard of painting and scenery on offer was, as always at the Partizan shows, simply superb, and judging the prizewinners was an agonising task. But overall, I think we picked the games that were truly representative of ‘the spirit of Partizan’ and the enormous efforts put in by those staging them. In particular, huge congratulations to our own patron here, Steve Jones whose glorious AWI layout won ‘Best of Show’.

Finally, thank you so much to those of you who came up and said “Hello!” at the show, with several even burdened with copies of my books to sign, which, given their average heft, is way beyond the call of duty! Seriously, it was lovely to meet you and that’s the kind of thing that really makes a difference to these shows.

Enjoy the video!
