Battlechat 14 with Phil Dutré

I’m delighted to have well-known Belgian wargamer and academic (he’s a Professor of Computer Science) Phil Dutré join me on the show. Phil has been on the wargaming scene for a long time and indeed, as you will hear, is one of the hobby’s veteran bloggers—his Tiny Tin Men blog predates even my own Battlegames website from back in the late 1990s.

Phil and I had a wide-ranging discussion, not only about the wargaming scene in Belgium (which may be a complete unknown for many listeners in the Anglophone world) and his remarkable database of wargames magazines, but also about his passions of staging games at the CRISIS show in Antwerp annually and his other extraordinary blog about Wargaming Mechanics, which I found mind-expanding (and so should any of you who ever write your own rules, whether as a hobby or professionally).

We talk about the kind of wargaming the Phil does, primarily with his wargaming chums rather than as part of a club, and explore his wonderful wargaming ‘philosophy’, which caused your host to get quite excited!

Whilst listening to the podcast, bear in mind that the man you hear speaking such word-perfect English is, in fact, a native Flemish speaker, a reminder of the lengths many of our European gaming friends go to in order to share our hobby and the tremendous welcome they give us whenever we cross the Channel to visit their shows.

My thanks to Phil for coming on the show, and I’m sure that you will be both fascinated and entertained to hear what he has to say.

Henry
