I am very sad to have to report that Byron, the wonderful old horse that featured in the video I made earlier this year, has had to be put to sleep following a deterioration in his health.
My thoughts are with friend, writer and horsewoman Roz Morris whose remarkable journey with the gentle giant was recorded via a long-running series of posts on Facebook, where hundreds of her friends avidly followed her horsey anecdotes about the rise and fall in his fortunes and the wonderful companionship they shared.
Most of all, He will be remembered as the unnamed subject of Roz’s brilliant science fiction novel Lifeform Three, in which he provides inspiration for a race of robot servants to seek their freedom.
I feel very lucky indeed to have been invited to meet him on a couple of occasions, and Roz has told me that the video I made will be a cherished memento of her equine soul-mate. I am so glad that I was able to provide at least that for her.
Byron was a remarkable beast, living well beyond his expected lifespan and it is very sad that eventually, his more than three decades caught up with him. It has been a heartbreaking decision for Roz to spare him further suffering and call in the vet to perform his final duties, a heart-rending decision that all of us who own pets great or small are familiar with.
RIP dear Byron, and thank you for the pleasure you have given to so many, most especially Roz.
