Battlechat 8: Neil Shuck, Podcasting Maestro

It’s a real pleasure to be able to announce that, after a long interlude, I managed to get podcasting maestro Neil Shuck of the Meeples & Miniatures podcast at the other end of a Skype connection and turn the tables by interviewing him—though as you’ll hear, old habits die hard and at moments he can’t resist swapping hats and putting me on the spot!

Neil and I have a bit of history together. Long-time followers will know that he first interviewed me on his show many years ago, and we also managed to create some fifteen View from the Veranda podcasts (also available via the M&M website) before we decided to put the gin & tonics back in the cabinet and turn off the lights (though not necessarily forever…). Neil also became a columnist for me, from issue 27 of Battlegames through to issue 399 of Miniature Wargames with Battlegames—a total of 39 monthly and 8 bi-monthly columns, a respectable total by anyone’s standards.

In short, Neil is now quite rightly regarded as one of the stalwarts of the hobby and has garnered a reputation of being an extremely well-informed ‘everyman’ with strongly-held views about the wider hobby.

This show is something of a catch-up for the two of us, but more importantly I wanted to recognise Neil’s magnificent achievement of having recently hit the astonishing total of 250 podcasts produced, most of them solo, but for the last couple of years with the help of others too. We also chat about our shared experience of Patreon and the different ways we have found of funding our activities in the hobby, as well as revealing that Neil is, at last, playing more games than ever before.

We also mention, in passing, a certain book that your host is writing…

The show is the longest I’ve yet produced but, I can assure you, positively brief compared to some of the marathon listens that Neil and I have inflicted on the listening public in the past. All I can say is, if necessary, listen in chunks or skip the boring bits!

I hope you enjoy the show and once again, my thanks to Neil for agreeing to come onto Battlechat and allowing himself to be put under the spotlight, not a situation he’s used to, or necessarily feels comfortable in, as you’ll hear.

Roll ’em high!
