Earlier today, I sat in a very warm warehouse in Sussex with Will Townshend of The Plastic Soldier Company/PSC Games and chatted with him for an hour and a half about all sorts of things.
The conversation began with how The Plastic Soldier Company came into existence in the first place, how it has fared in the turbulent arena of the historical wargames market and its plans for the future.
Our attention then turned to the sphere which has dominated Will’s life for the last couple of years: boardgames, and the emergence of PSC Games as a major player in the crossover wargames/boardgames market. Of particular interest has been his association with Richard Borg, best known for his Commands & Colors series of games with GMT games, but who has been branching out into new areas recently, most particularly with PSC.
In the course of our conversation, we dealt with things like Kickstarter, finding the right niche in the wargames market, learning from mistakes and even miniature houses of ill repute – seriously!
Will is a highly intelligent and interesting chap with plenty to say about not only the plans for his company (which are very exciting), but also about the hobby in general, the kind of audiences he’s reaching out to, and the big names in game design working alongside him to create exciting projects – including Dan Mersey, who I interviewed for this show recently (Battlechat 3).
It’s a fairly lengthy show – apologies to those of you who prefer shorter stuff – but the “pause” button is always an option and I felt it was worthwhile allowing Will to give full answers to the questions posed, which he did with relish!
P.S. An apology is in order because, evidently affected by hayfever more than I realised, I have a persistent sniff throughout the podcast, which I hope you don’t find too distracting. Lesson learned about having appropriate medication and handkerchief with me on a hot day!
