Battlechat 69 with author Russell Phillips

Russell Phillips writes books and articles about military technology and history. Born and brought up in a mining village in South Yorkshire, Russell has lived and worked in South Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, Cumbria and Staffordshire. He has always had a deep interest in history and conflicts all over the world, and enjoys sharing knowledge with others through clear, factual accounts which shine a light on events of the past.

Russell also happens to be a wargamer, and has been playing games since the 1970s. His hobby encompasses board wargames, miniature wargames and RPGs. Most recently, he has been experimenting with RPGs over Discord (graduating from IRC), but he’s also recently discovered Memoir ’44 Online and VASSAL He also gets to play some Panzer Kids with his daughter.

I have been delighted to be involved in Russell’s latest project, A Strange Campaign, which describes the Allied invasion of Madagascar in 1942, a little-known episode during the war in which it was the Vichy French, rather than the Germans, who fought opposite the British and their South African colleagues.

So, sit back and listen to the story not only of the man, but of the fascinating range of projects which he has worked on.
