Battlechat 68 with Melvyn Jenkins-Welch

Meet another patron – this time, the lovely Melvyn Jenkins-Welch who for the last year or more has been squeezing his wargaming time in between shifts as an emergency doctor running a busy Intensive Care Unit, saving the lives of Covid patients in NHS hospitals.

With an international background spanning Wales and England, Mel is a great raconteur with stories about how his wargaming began with a chance encounter at school with The Hobbit, which led him via Dungeons & Dragons to Warhammer Fantasy Battles.

But then he jumped the divide, thanks to Warhammer Ancient Battles, to historical gaming and he has never looked back. With an eclectic range of ‘not quite finished’ projects on the go, Melvyn can be found dabbling with micro-scale miniatures for the Austro-Prussian and Franco-Prussian Wars, or splashing paint onto many different sizes of miniatures for the American Civil War. He also dabbles in Napoleonics, but his greatest love is for the 18th century, and it is here that your editor and Mel align, because Mel confesses to owning very large quantities of Spencer Smith Miniatures indeed!

Moreover, our guest also has his own imagi-nations project on the go, but here he retreats to the boyhood memory of 1/72 plastics, using an interesting mixture of figures ranging throughout the 18th and into the early 19th centuries – and he explains why.

So, sit back, relax and listen to one of the nicest guys you could possibly hope to meet across the tabletop, winner of the “Most Gentlemanly Player” award at the 2018 annual Donald Featherstone Tribute Weekend, and a credit both to our hobby and his profession.
