Battlechat 64 with Barry Hilton

Barry Hilton has been around the wargaming scene a long time, and in the days before the Covid-19 lockdown was well-known for staging delightful demo games around the UK and sometimes far beyond, latterly featuring his own range of Warfare Miniatures arrayed to demonstrate the rulesets he has published through his own Wordtwister Publishing imprint, such as Beneath the Lily Banners and Donnybrook.

So, with severe lockdowns in place throughout the UK that have kyboshed the normal wargame show scene, you would think that these circumstances would have put a crimp in Barry’s style – but quite the opposite is the case! Revelling in the extra time that being forced to stay at home has given him, this Scottish wargaming legend has been busier than ever, playing games (both solo and online), working out scenarios that he has bundled into saleable products and beavering away at the keyboard, penning no less than three books that are hitting the shelves right now, and another ruleset to come in 2021.

Barry has done more than almost anyone else to popularise the 1660-1720 period, taking in a swathe of military and naval history that has lain, for far too long, relatively unvisited by wargamers. Sit back, relax and listen to this man’s unbridled enthusiasm for the era, his advice for solo wargamers and his thoughts about the future of the hobby.
