Battlechat 19 with Dave Brown

Today, I welcome the man responsible for several popular rulesets, such as General de Brigade, Guns at Gettysburg and Battlegroup Panzergrenadier onto the podcast: Dave Brown.

I have known Dave since the early days of Battlegames in 2006, and it has been fascinating to see how he has managed that popularity, supporting online forums and staging numerous visually appealing demo/participation games with his chums at Loughton Strike Force.

In recent years, Dave has been taken under the wing of TooFatLardies who have published two of his rulesets under their Reisswitz Press imprint—Pickett’s Charge and General d”Armée—and later this year will produce his third ruleset, Battalion HQ for WWII games.

In our lengthy conversation, Dave and I cover a lot of ground, ranging from his early experiences of the hobby, to explaining his passion for the Napoleonic era, the American Civil War and WWII. But we also uncover the fact that Dave also has a deep and abiding interest in the Ancients era, even though his early experiences of the period were not exactly auspicious!

Dave is extremely well-read in the periods he games, and has ‘real life’ military experience of his own to inform his rules writing, so join us and listen to how an experienced wargamer and rules writer goes about designing games for us to enjoy.

NB At 1:04:59, discussing the training of the modern Household Cavalry, Dave refers to “HMQ”—this is an abbreviation of “Her Majesty the Queen”.
