Battlechat 17 with Richard Lockwood

The latest podcast gives me the opportunity to introduce Richard Lockwood, the man responsible for organising the Society of Ancients annual Conference and its Battle Day, which this year will feature Telamon 225BC.

Richard is a man steeped in the hobby which he has been involved with since his school days, and grew up reading many of the books made famous by the doyens of the hobby in the 1970s and 80s, prompting me to reach over to my ‘old- and middle-school’ shelves beside me several times!

Richard shares his passion and excitement for the Ancients era in general and Greeks, Macedonians and Achaemenid Persians in particular, but we also discover that he is a man with broad interests, who confesses to being knee-deep in 30mm Minden Miniatures for 18th century games and has an unexpected love of Bruce Quarrie’s Eastern Front wargames rules dating back to the 1980s!

Most of all, we learn a great deal about the function of the Society of Ancients, the role of its famous flagship magazine Slingshot, and his hopes for the future. En passant, we also mention a wide variety of Ancients rulesets and their popularity for either competition or casual wargaming.

All in all, a fascinating discussion with a man who clearly loves the hobby and is a wonderful ambassador for Ancients gaming in particular.

Here’s a thread I started on The Wargames Website quite some time ago, asking for Ancients wargame rules recommendations—it got a lot of interesting replies.
