Battlechat 113 with James ‘Midgard’ Morris

One of the things I love about this job is having the opportunity to talk to people I have seen around the shows for many years, but have never had the chance to sit down with and have a proper conversation. James Morris is one of those figures whose work I have admired for years, winning prizes for best demo or best of show at Partizan in particular at regular intervals.

The recent release of his new and much-anticipated ruleset Midgard has therefore provided the ideal opportunity to finally have a sit-down with him and find out more, not just about the new and celebrated ruleset, but also about the man himself – and there are plenty of surprises! There is much discussed that some of you may already know about, but I bet there are a few things that will come as news to you as much as they did to me.

James has a distinguished history in the hobby, not just as a man who puts on glorious games, but also as a writer of articles dating back to the early days of Wargames Illustrated, and of course the author of a couple of notable books for the much-missed Warhammer Ancient Battles: El Cid in 2003, and The Age of Arthur in 2007 with Steve Jones. Both these titles revealed his passion for and deep knowledge of the periods dominated by swords, shields and spears, and of course made the perfect prep for the ruleset he is currently publicising.

We dedicate a fair chunk of the show to Midgard, but as you probably know, he has been ‘doing the circuit’ publicising the ruleset for a while now, so please consult the links below to find much more in-depth explanation of how the rules work, including the series of videos made by James with Rich from TooFatLardies, and James’ own delightful Mogsymakes website and Facebook groups.

My thanks to James for his passion and enthusiasm which made for a hjighly enjoyable chat.

Henry
