Artificial Intelligence: Inbound

I listened to – and indeed watched – the latest TooFatLardies podcast released to patrons this morning.

As ever, Rich, Nick and Sid provided an excellent and entertaining show covering all things Lard and more besides.

But it just so happened that the subject discussed on the ‘Sofa of Contemplation’ and in the secret postscript section afterwards was AI, a subject close to my heart for many reasons.

I left a couple of comments on their Patreon page hinting at how strong my feelings are about AI, but it is such a big and potentially emotive subject that I am going to give it my focused attention here in a special broadcast in the near future. I may well release it in video, audio and written formats because it’s so important to me.

There’s no denying that AI is here to stay and that there’s no putting the genie back in the bottle, but we can all make informed choices about what we are and are not willing to accept in the hobby and in the wider realm of creativity. Therefore, I want to provide you with information, look at the options and help you to understand why I have made my own decisions concerning the use of AI in my own creative work.

Spoiler alert: whilst I can see the potential usefulness of AI in scientific, technical and even certain administrative functions, I have deep and abiding misgivings about its use in the creative fields, in terms of legality, morality, mental health, society, the environment and, not least, actual creativity. And as for my hobby, I have spoken about flow so often that you can probably already guess where I stand.

Watch this space.
