Troy Small is one of those marvellous people – a huge star for a large community on YouTube, but a really nice, modest, down-to-earth guy with whom one can have an enjoyable chat about anything.
How big a star? Well, his Sonic Sledgehammer YouTube painting tutorials channel has 48,000 (yes, forty-eight thousand) subscribers. He tries not to think about that too much!
Troy was born in New Zealand, and spent his formative years there before moving around the globe to the UK, where he ended up getting a job in a Games Workshop store. There, he learned the GW way of painting armies quickly to a good ‘gaming’ standard, a set of techniques that has served him well in his quest to dominate YouTube! He also helped run mega-games at GW’s famous ‘Games Days’, and he rubbed shoulders with many of the GW/Nottingham luminaries who have appeared on this very show.
Life took Troy back to New Zealand for a while (and before you ask, no, he didn’t appear in The Lord of the Rings films), but then returned with his wife to Europe, and he now lives in a delightful corner of Bavaria in Germany.
Sit back and enjoy the show as Troy regales us not only with fascinating insights into his journey to becoming a YouTuber of note, but also reveals how he goes about making his videos, some painting tips and much more besides. A true gentle giant of the hobby and a great ambassador for the miniature painting arts.
